Just thought I would note down some of the things I have done, when setting up my new laptop. Feel free to pick and choose from the list below, however if you don't know what something is then ignore it - you have been warned!
- Install SysInternals tools, especially Process Explorer
- Install Firefox, including dictionary
- Configure Firefox Sync
- Change Taskbar properties setting for "Taskbar buttons" to "Combine when taskbar is full", also from there configure the "Notification area" as needed
- Add Windows Features via the Control Panel, to install IIS and Telnet Client among other things
- Install Notepad++ and configure as needed
- Update Adobe Flash and turn automatic updates on
- Microsoft Outlook: set Signature & use in new & reply/forward, set "Close original message on reply/forward", set "After processing, move receipts to: Deleted Items", set "Delete blank voting and meeting requests after processing", set "For all messages I send, request: Read receipt", set "Use this option to decide how to respond to requests for read receipts: Always send a response", set "When replying..." and "When forwarding..." to "Include and indent original message text"
- Set Live Meeting to "Use my assigned conference ID", click "Schedule a Conference Call" and then click "Audio" and set the option
- Configure the Command Prompt
- Install Nokia Suite for my Nokia N8, issue with MTP USB Driver....
- Install Mozilla Thunderbird, with the following Extensions: Lightning, Lookout, CompactHeader, Extra Folder Columns, ThunderBrowse, Remove Duplicate Messages (Alternate) & BritishEnglish Dictionary (Updated)
- Move Thunderbird Profile over, see Changing Computers for details
- Install PasswordSafe: set "Put Groups first in Tree View",
- Uninstall old versions of Adobe Reader and install the latest
- Install Logitech SetPoint drivers from http://www.logitech.com/en-gb/support/mice, my mouse is an Anywhere Mouse MX, which by the way is totally brilliant!
- Install IDM Comp tools: UltraEdit, UltraCompare & UltraFinder
- Install WinDirStat
- Install GenealogyJ
- Install PDF Creator
- Install GoldWave
- Install FileZilla, specifically, the client
- Install ImgBurn
- Install Python, I recommend the latest 2.x followed by the latest 3.x
- Set a System Environment Variable, via the Control Panel such that PYTHONPATH=D:\Development\Python\Modules
- Set a User Environment Variable, via the Contorl Panel such that PATH=D:\Development\LiveScripts
